K. Pablo Traces the Origins of Air America's Most Famous
If you grew up in Chicago at a time when saturday morning cartoons were a weekly ritual, you no doubt would be familiar with a show called Gigglesnort Hotel. One character whose name was Weird (don't know if he had a last name, it was just "Weird" ... like "Sting") is pictured in the photo at left (he's the one on the left in the pic).
Later in life when Saturday Night Live replaced saturday morning cartoons in my viewing calendar, I could not escape the sneaky suspicion that Al Franken was the inspiration for Weird. Only a heck of a lot less pleasant. Separated at Birth? You be the judge.

...So you grew up in Chicago...may I ask where? I spent most of my life on the North Side(Skokie to be exact) and happen to be a devoted Sox', Cubs', Bears', and Bulls' fan. I don't go for soccer and hockey. Also: what do you think the chances are of the Bears doing well the season are? Getting into the playoffs? Superbowl?
I mostly grew up in Marquette Park, making me a dyed-in-the-wool Southsider with no patience for the Cubs!
The Bears are looking good, having crushed the Packers last weekend (I was watching it at O'Hare); Offense, Defense, and Special Teams were all looking really good. Don't know if I'll be able to see all of the Bears games down here in Tampa, though. For added laughs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are playing the Bears in Chicago. In December.
Hope you brought a 16-inch softball to Israel with you!
K.-man: the Bears looked mighty good against a very bad team. Question is, can they keep it up for the duration of the season? This is closely connected to whether Rex can stay healthy and honestly speaking, I have strong doubts he can. The Bears have a relatively easy schedule, though, maybe the easiest in the NFL this season based on ESPN analysis.
I'm picking Da Bears to win the division and go 10-6. I'm also picking them to win in the first round of the playoffs. Clearly, though, they're not a Superbowl team yet. Hopefully, two, three years down the line they'll be in contention to bring the 'Bowl back to Chi-town.
Next question: what do you think the Sox' chances of making the playoffs this year are?
p.s. nobody (absolutely nobody) plays baseball in Israel and hardly anyone plays American football--real football. I must say I've been disappointed by the status of sports here. The government spends very little of its budget on professional sports. It's pretty pathetic and a little degrading for our athletes.
There's yet to be an Israeli b-ball player to make it to the NBA. Maybe this is because army service is mandatory and most athletes must also serve in the IDF.
Well, well, well...3-0 it is. Seattle is up next. Rex has yet to prove me wrong, though. I still have strong doubts he has what it takes to be a star in the NFL.
...As for the Sox, I won't go there.I just hope Ozzie doesn't poison any drinking fountains in Minneapolis.
Even if you want to call our Division an easy one, how sweet is it to beat the Packers, Vikings, and Detroit all in SEPTEMBER?
It's Tuesday..................................G-d almighty I had a difficult night(but then I woke up) I stayed up to watch Da Bears. I gave up on the game with 5 and a half minutes to go...you fill in the rest...
...Forget 10-6. I'm changing that to 15-1. Is that legal? I mean the season is into week 7...
...will attend a Bulls' game in Chicago. Hope it's a winner.
does that mean you didn't see the end of the game???
yep...I woke up expecting to see news of the Bears' firt loss. I sat there repeating: this is unf###ing believable till my wife politely told me that if I didn't stop she'd smack me upside the head.
just to clarify: I know the game began at 8pm Eastern, but since I live in Israel, I woke up at around 3am local time to catch some of the game. Seeing they were down 23-10, I was devastated. I expected it to be as easy as everyone had predicted.
BTW: have you seen footage of the Miami-FSU fight?
Ok...forget 15-1! Just hope sexy Rexy(that's what they used to call him on Sports' Radio 1000, my favorite radio station ever) gets the show rolling again!
p.s. I'm in Chi-town till this Thursday.Then...back to Israel.
Rex really let me down sunday. Talking to a teammate of his from U of Florida the other day... he was notorious for being either hot or cold, and was susceptible to easily getting rattled if he threw a pick or fumbled early in the game. We need to get him psyched for the rest of the season.
Have fun in the Chicagoland Area. I was just there for the holiday weekend and the weather was awesome.
Pablo: I got home 2 days ago. My Chicago visit was great. I'm watching Da Bears right now and Rex seems to be dazed...again. What's gonna happen to these guys???
Let's hope for a win!
O.k. got the win...Rex still in a world of hurt...on to the playoffs...
I think some of the fans may actually have been booing Rex. He'd better grow up fast. Quit going for the bomb all the time.
Glad to see you got out before teh blizzard.
Yeah...I heard 'em booing him all the way from over here in Israel;) It was devastating. But hey, that's what you get for either getting intercepted or passing for 1 all day long.
Pablo: do you ever listen to am1000 WMVP? I'm listening to it as I type...good stuff!
Rex has got to go. We cna go to hell waiting for him to break out of his psyched-out head. Passer rating of 1.3??? Griese can't be much worse.
got a url for am1000 mvp?
Yupper...here we go....www.espnradio1000.com. That should do it. Sometimes I don't get a very good connection but that's probably cause i'm pretty darn far away from 'em States.
BTW: I think the only chance the Bears have of winning the Superbowl is with Rex. Griese is ok but Rex has a lot more potential.
Well, rumor has it that Griese will be getting some reps tonight... so... we'll be watching!
Well, I guess you were wrong. But we did clinch a bye. Go Bears. Lovie should get a huge contract next season and so should Rex.
Check out my post on the NFL. And uh...I posted your piece. Thanks a bunch!
looks like Rex showed up last night! How bout that HESTER!!!
"Hester Da Masta of Disasta" might just eclipse 10 returns for touchdowns this season. I wouldn't bet on it, but hey...no one would have thought he would have gotten 6 and it's only week 14.
BTW Greg, for some reason I can't post on your blog...
K. Pablo: I'm not sure. My grandma has been having the same problem. I'll have to find a cure somehow. Maybe it's because I'm now blogging from Google?
So...K-man: how do ya think Da Bears will do in the playoffs? My take is they'll go down in the second round but don't tell anyone...
I think you got it about right there, Greg. We'll see how they look against the Pack tonight. I only expect them to go one round but I've underestimated them before.
Okay, Pablo. It's been some time since Da NFC Champs lost to the Peckers(excuse my French). Now here's the big question: What will be the outcome of Superbowl 41? I'm going with Bears 41 Colts 39. How 'bout you?
If da Bearss were playing with Ditka, I would say da score would be 37,000 to t'ree. Since dey're playing widout Ditka, it's only going to be 87 ta nothing.
We got a Giordano's pizza just moved into the neighborhood here and I got some pies on order for Sunday. I'm stressed out about this! Friggin' REX!
We're sending the Colts to the glue factory ... with Barbaro.
I love the elusion to poor ol' chap 'Barbaro'. And hell yeah, Da Bears wit or witout Ditka are gonna bit em Colts!!!
Giordano's rules.
p.s. On my last trip(to America;) I threw up in Giordano's in Skokie. One family man was so upset he was giving my friends this "tough-guy" look-down. Then my friend asked him politely: "Are you gonna be able to finish that pizza of yours!?"
